A serious plane crash took place on Sunday, September 6, 2026, at Miami International Airport, where a Boeing 767-300 cargo aircraft operating for Amazon Prime Air overtook the runway on landing and hit several motor vehicles. The toll is tragic: five people died and five others were injured, three of whom are in critical condition . .

Accident details

Amazon Prime Air flight, operated by Cargo 21 Air, arrived from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico . Around 14:00 local time (20:00 GMT), the 32-year-old plane landed on the airport’s number 30 runway . The aircraft overtook the runway at a speed of approximately 207 km/h (130 mph) and hit navigation equipment before breaking the perimeter fence and entering a Ford Van and a Toyota Corolla on a road behind the airport . .

Victims and intervention

There were seven people in the Ford Van. Among the victims are the occupants of this vehicle . The pilot and co-pilot were trapped in the cab, and some victims were found stuck in the cars hit by the plane . Firefighters intervened with more than 60 crews and approximately 200 rescuers . The intervention was complicated by a strong fire and a fuel leak . One of the victims was found trapped under a vehicle . .

The consequences: the airport, paralyzed

All airport runways were closed immediately after the accident, but two of the four runways reopened during the evening . By Sunday evening, more than 160 flights were canceled and approximately 325 were delayed . Passengers were advised to check flight status before heading to the airport . .

Ongoing investigation

US National Transport Safety Council (NTSB) sent a team of investigators led by President Jennifer Homendy to investigate the causes of the accident . Aviation specialists believe that a key point of the investigation will be the exact moment of touching the runway. Video footage shows that the plane has floated above the runway more than normal, which may indicate a late landing, which significantly reduced the available braking space . The investigation will also focus on speed, braking, weather conditions (reporting gusts of wind up to 48 km/h) and the mechanical condition of the aircraft . .
