Coffee, the favorite drink of the Belgians (on average two cups a day), has become more expensive in the last four years. According to the data published by the consumer organization Test-Aankoop, the price of coffee increased by 41% Between 2022 and 2026. Although growth has moderated in recent months, prices remain high. A cup of coffee at home today costs much more than a few years ago, and the factors that led to this price increase are numerous and complex.

How has the price of coffee evolved?

Test-Aankoop monitors the price of ground coffee and capsules since November 2020. There have been two periods of significant price increases (inflation above 20%): at the end of 2022 and at the end of 2025. The peak of November 2025 (inflation of 22.5%), prices began to fall gradually. In April 2026, inflation fell to 13%, in May to 9%, in June to 6%, and in July to 3%. However, the average price remains 41% higher than four years ago.

Why did the coffee get more expensive?

The causes of this increase are multiple and interconnected:

1. Extreme weather conditions: drought, floods and storms in the main coffee-producing regions (Brazil, Vietnam, Colombia) have significantly reduced crops. A lower offer means higher prices.

2. European deforestation regulations: The EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), which was to come into force at the end of 2025, created an additional demand for coffee in Europe, which led to an increase in prices. Although its application has been postponed by one year, the impact on prices has already been felt.

3. Geopolitical conflicts: The Middle East War disrupted sea routes, especially those through the Red Sea and the Suez Canal. Asian coffee (including Vietnam Robusta) was affected and transport costs increased significantly.

4. Production costs: In the absence of labor, growers had to offer higher wages to attract employees. Also, the price of fertilizers increased, which led to the increase in production.

Although prices have risen, consumers can take steps to reduce costs:

• Choose coffee beans: It is cheaper in the long term than ground or capsules and tastes better.
• Opt for lesser known brands: Supermarkets’ own brands are significantly cheaper than international ones.
